Unschooling (FR)
Apart from maybe Crass and the Beach Boys, few bands can claim the luxury of sounding like their own name. Unschooling, a newly formed quartet spanning Rouen and Montreal, achieves this with flair.
Orchestrated in the style of post-Women bands, where intricate guitar parts flirt with the spontaneity of lo-fi music, the seemingly math-rock of these “unschooled” heads defies the worn-out codes of a mammoth that needs trimming.
Composed of former members of MNNQNS and other Rouen-based projects, the four rebels have built their own CNED (correspondence school) around a post-punk that is at times noisy, at times sensitive – and they might well end up in the principal’s office if shrapnel-like pop songs didn’t occasionally surface on the page.
