Preceded by Piazza Centrale and Seia, the album moves through memory, blending singer-songwriter music, pop, and electronic experimentation to tell a timeless story.

Influenced by her childhood home, La Maccaia takes its name from a specific meteorological phenomenon in the Gulf of Genoa, where humidity forms a fog that blends with the sea, previously referenced by Paolo Conte. Gaia Banfi envisions the album as an imaginary landscape across seven tracks, imagining listening to it while walking along the Genoese coastline, creating an atmosphere of subtle shadows and slowly emerging images. The album cover features a dowsing rod, symbolizing a search for past images and memories, reinforcing the reflective, almost meditative journey the music invites.

Compelling in its contrast between acid and softer tones, minimalism and majestic arrangements, La Maccaia showcases Gaia Banfi’s music as it flows effortlessly between influences like Bon Iver, Radiohead, Floating Points, Stan Getz, and Robert Wyatt, alongside meditative and popular music traditions. Deconstructed song structures intertwine with intimate, evocative storytelling reminiscent of De André and Lucio Battisti, while her voice alternates between enveloping warmth and piercing clarity, often blending with choirs that convey a collective urge to sing, all anchored by a steady, cadenced rhythm.
